Do you have a medical condition like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, among a long list of other conditions?
Are you allergic to some medications or food products like peanuts?
If you were involved in say an auto accident and unable to talk, how
would rescuers know what medications were in your system or what medical
conditions you have? Yet rescuers or an ER Doctor not knowing could
mean a serious or even fatal mistake.
In talking with some fire rescue people, they have said that when
they arrive on the scene with a person being down they look for any
information they can find. Sadly if someone is with them like a spouse
they are many times in a panic state and may not be able to give clear
answers. When no one is there they look for answers in wallets, cell
phones, etc. Unfortunately time can be lost at a time that is critical.
Having a medical alert bracelet or necklace, something that has been
available for sometime is a good start. At least your medical condition
can be known.
Carrying in your wallet or purse a paper with more information is
better but still can have issues. If hand written can it be easily read
by someone? Having a paper in your wallet for any length of time means it could look bad and may not be clearly readable.
The answer to these problems is carrying a flash or jump drive with all your
information neatly organized. So what is a flash or jump drive? Simply put it is
a storage device that plugs into a USB port on a computer and is
generally plug and play. While all you will need at most is a 1 gigabyte
size, more memory will give you the option to store other information
like x-rays or a diary showing say your blood pressure.
